L’Orignal is home to several courthouses, each serving specific legal needs for residents.
There are four levels of court at the L’Orignal Courthouse: Superior Court of Justice, Ontario Court of Justice, Small Claims Court and Provincial Offences Court

Superior Court of Justice
The Honourable Justice Brian C.J. Holowka and the Honourable Justice Michelle Flaherty sit in this court which deals with more serious criminal cases, civil cases and all family cases. From time to time, Justice Holowka and Justice Flaherty have the assistance of Superior Court Justices from Ottawa. As in all the L’Orignal courts, this court operates in both English and French; and, every litigant has the right to be heard in the language of their choice.
The court sits in the original 1825 stone L’Orignal Courthouse on Queen Street. The court Registrar’s office is located in the modern south extension, on the second floor. You can access the Registrar’s office from the parking lot on the west side of the building.

Ontario Court of Justice
The Honourable Justice Marc D’Amours presides in this court located in the Courthouse at 1023 King Street, L’Orignal. This court deals exclusively with criminal matters. Every criminal charge begins in this court; some of the more serious charges may move on to the Superior Court.
Legal Aid Duty Counsel has their office in this Courthouse to assist those persons appearing without a lawyer.
From time to time, Ottawa Judges may sit in this court and cases are heard in both English and French.

Small Claims Court
This court deals with civil claims under $25,000 in the Superior Court Courthouse, as it is a division of the Superior Court. Small Claims Court is presided over by a roster of part-time Deputy Judges who are practicing lawyers.
It is not necessary to have a lawyer to proceed in Small Claims Court, and there are self-explanatory packages available at the court office to help you prepare and file either your claim, or your defence.
The office is at the same location as other court administrations.

Provincial Offences Court
Provincial Offences include any breaches of Provincial Laws, including Highway Traffic offences, hunting laws, transportation, environmental, and municipal by-laws. Justices of the Peace preside in this court and it is held every Thursday. There is no Legal Aid Duty Counsel or assistance in this court.
The court is at the corner of Court and Queen streets, and the entry door is on Queen Street.
